8/23: Started chapter 3 on Mass Relationships, covered through molecular/molar mass.
8/24: Continued chapter 3 by discussing percent composition, empirical formulas, chemical equations and their balancing, and stoichiometry. Assigned problems 3.18, 3.22, 3.26, 3.30, 3.42, 3.48, 3.54, 3.68, and 3.70 for tomorrow. These problems will be presented in class using white boards. Also, lab "Findng the Relationship" is due Thursday.
8/25: WB presentation of homework problems. Tomorrow, finish chapter 3 and start chapter 4.
8/26: Finished chapter 3 on limiting reagent and % yield and started chapter 4, discussing solutions, electrolytes, and precipitation reactions.

September 6- September 10

9/9: Returned to chapter 4, covering molarity, dilutions, gravimetric analysis, and titration. Tomorrow, discuss pH, ICE tables for weaks acids and bases.
9/10: Started discussion on pH from chapter 15. Assigned for homework problems 4.60-4.66 even, 4.72, 4.78, 4.80, 4.86, 4.88, 15.16-15.26 even. For onday, WB homework problems assigned today and if there's time, discuss pH of strong acids/bases and of weak acids/bases using ICE tables.

September 13- September 17

9/13: WB presentation of homework assigned Friday. Tomorrow handouts for first two titration labs and discuss pH of acids/bases.
9/14: Handed out next two titration lab instructions and discussed standardization prelab. Also, covered pH computations for srong acids/bases and weak acids/bases using ICE tables. Tomorrow, demonstration of titration technique and make NaOH solution for titration labs.
9/15: Demonstrated how to titrate an acid using NaOH. Students made their NaOH solutions. Tomorrow, start the standardization lab.
9/16: Started lab #3 on standardizing NaOH solution by titrating KHP.

9/21: Started Lab #4: Determination of the Amount of Acetic Acid in Vinegar.
9/22: Continued with Lab #4. WB results from titration of vinegar lab from two lab groups, illustrating the computations involved. Discussed Lab #5: Titration of an Unknown Diprotic Acid.
9/23: Continue with titration labs, i.e., finish Lab #4 and/or start lab #5.
9/24: Finish titration labs.

September 27- October 1

9/27: Lab cleanup and, if necessary, finish titration of diprotic acid lab. Tomorrow, discuss buffers.
9/28: Started chapter 16 by discussing acid/base equilibria and common ion effect. Also derived the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation and discussed buffers. Assigned problems 16.10-16.20 even.
9/29: Reviewed computations for the three titration labs in preparation for Friday's lab quiz.
9/30: Continued with chapter 16, discussed finding the pH of buffer solutions before and after adding an acid or base. Also, presented material on determining the equivalence point pH when titrating weak acid with strong base or weak base with strong acid. Tomorrow, three titration labs are due and lab quiz covering all three labs.
10/1: Quiz over three titration labs, which are due today. Also, assigned problems 16.24-16.32, even and problems 16.36 and 16.38. Monday, continue chapter 16 discussing solubility equilibria.

October 4- October 8

10/4: Discussed solubility equilibria from chapter 16 and reviewed homework problems assigned 9/26. Tomorrow, WB these homework problems.
10/5: WB problems 16.12-16.26 for in class presentation. Tomorrow, continue with solubility equilibria from chapter 16.
10/6: Covered acid/base indicators and solubility equilibria and assigned problems 16.46-16.54 even. Tomorrow, finish the chapter.

10/26: Gas stoichiometry and Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures and assigned homework problems 5.32-5.50, 5.52-5.60, and 5.64-5.70 even. These problems will be WB on Thursday.
10/27: Finish and work on lab report, as well as homework assignment.
10/28: WB problems from the homework assignment from chapter 5 on gas laws. Gas laws lab due Monday; there will be a lab quiz covering the experiments performed in the lab.

November 1- November 5

11/1: Reviewed KMT and lab quiz.
11/2: Discussed KMT explanation of the major gas laws, talked about root-mean-square speed of gas molecules relative to temperature and molar mass of the gas, and introduced diffusion. Tomorrow, deviations from ideal behavior by gases and finihs chapter 5, introduce chapter 6 on Thermochemistry.
11/3: Discussed deviations from ideal behavior and corrections using Van der Waals equation. Started chapter 6 on Thermochemistry discussing types of energy and systems.
11/4: In chapter 6, covered systems, state functions, internal energy, work and heat. Assigned problems 5.78, 5.80, 5.146, 6.16-6.20 even, 6.26, 6.28, and 6.34-6.38 even.
11/5: Work on homework assignment in class.

November 8- November 12

11/8: WB homework problems from last Thursday.
11/9: Chapter 6, discussed calorimetry and calculating q of a reaction. Lab hand out for pre-lab for determining the enthalpy of a chemical reaction.
11/10: Finished chapter 6 and started chapter 18, discussing spontaneous processes and entropy. Assigned problems 6.46-6.64 even as homework to do on Friday.
11/11: Started lab on Enthalpy of Chemical Reaction. Finish lab tomorrow.

November 15- November 19

11/17: Back into chapter 18, covering entropy, standard entropy of reaction and entropy change.
11/18: Chapter 18, covering Gibb's Free Energy and spontaneous chemical/physical changes. Assigned homework problems 18.10, 18.12, 18.14, 18.18, and 18.20. Test over Chapters 5, 6, and 18 scheduled for next Wednesday, November 25. Also, lab on Enthalpy of Chemical Reaction due next Monday, November 22. There will be a lab quiz as well.
11/19: Finished chapter 18 discussing the relationship between Gibb's Free Energy and the equilibrium constant. Assigned additional homework problems 18.24-18.32 even.

November 22- November 26

11/22: WB homework assignment from chapter 18. Changed the lab/lab quiz date to next Monday.

November 29- December 3

11/29: Handed back test over chapters 5, 6, and 18; corrections due tomorrow. Started discussion on quantum mechanics.
11/30: Started chapter 7 on Quantum Mechanics, discussed properties of waves, black-body problem, the photoelectric effects, and the 2-slit experiment using YouTube video from Dr. Quantum. Assigned problems 7.16, 7.18, 7.20, and 7.26-7.34 even for homework.
12/1: Homework problems.
12/2: Continued in chapter 7, covered emission spectra and Bohr model explanation as well as calculation of energy released when an electron moves to a lower energy state and how to calculate the wavelength of the photon of energy released. Assigned additional homework probelms 7.54-7.68 even.

December 6- December 10

12/6: Finished chapter 7 by discussing quantum numbers and writing a unique set of quantum numbers for each element and electron configurations.
12/7: Viewed video on Planck and Einstein and their explanations of the Black-Body problem, the Photoelectric Effect and the Heat Capacity Problem. Assigned problems 7.80-7.86 even, also handed out second reading from the book "Grand Design."
12/8: Handed back Chpater 5, 6, and 18 test with corrections and reviewed the test. Discussed second chapter from "Grand Design."
12/9: Watched 2-slit experiment and reviewed for test over quantum mechanics.
12/10: Test over Chapter 7: Quantum Mechanics.

1/5: Finished chapter 8 and started chapter 9 on "Bonding." Assigned problems 8.52-8.58, even, 8.62 and 8.64.
1/6: From chapter 9, discussed ionic, covalent and polar covalent bonds, and the concept of electronegativity and how it can be used to determine the polarity of bonds. Also, covered rules for drawing Lewis structures.
1/7: WB homework assignment from chapter 8. Assigned problems 9.16-9.20 even from chapter 9.

January 10- January 14

1/10: Covered formal charge and its use in deciding the best Lewis structure for a molecule. Also, presented resonance structures and exceptions to the octet rule from chapter 9. Assigned additional homework problems, 9.26, 9.36-9.40 even, 9.44-9.48 even, and 9.52-9.56 even.
1/11: Finished chapter 9 by discussing how to calculate heats of reaction using bond energies. Assigned problems 9.62-9.66 even, 9.70 and 9.72. Also, started chapter 10 on molecular geometry.
1/12: Presented how to determine the geometry of a molecule based on its Lewis structure. Also discussed how to determine the polarity of a molecule. Assigned problems 10.8-10.14 even and 10.20-10.24 even.

5/11: Performed extension of aspirin lab by analyzing the salicylic acid content of commericaly available aspirin spectrophotometrically.
